Last Updated on 08/24/2025
There are three questions that people ask about World Bullion Coins:
The term "World Bullion Coins" refers to government-minted bullion coins that are minted by renowned international mints and designed by professional artists.
Government bullion coins are legal tender and are backed by the government issuing the coin, which guarantees its weight, purity, and face value. However, the face value of a bullion coin almost never reflects its intrinsic value.
Many of these coins receive a higher premium price on the retail and secondary markets than other forms of bullion.
Government bullion coins display images by world-renowned coin designers who have received multiple awards for their artwork.
These designers include William Woodruff (Canada), Elise Martinson (Australia), John Mercanti (United States), and Jody Clark (United Kingdom).
Designers from international mints put symbols that represent their country's national heritage on bullion coins.
These include:
Minted since 1967, the Gold Krugerrand is the World's most circulated gold bullion coin.
The gold bullion coin is named after Paul Kruger, a popular four-term President of the former Republic of South Africa (1883-1900), while the South African currency is called the "Rand".
During the 1970s and early 80s, the Krugerrand dominated bullion sales with 90% market share.
However, in the late 1980s and early 1990s, South Africa's policy of apartheid brought along economic sanctions against the country, which made the Krugerrand illegal to import in many Western countries.
In 1994, South Africa abandoned apartheid. Shortly after the sanctions were lifted, the Krugerrand regained its status as one of the world's leading gold bullion coins.
Since the introduction of the Gold Krugerrand, over 60 million pieces, or more than 53 million ounces of gold, have been sold. This surpasses its closest competitors, the American Gold Eagle and Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins. (Source: Mining Weekly)
First minted in 1986, the American Eagle Gold bullion coin contains its full stated weight in 22 karat gold, which, by law, must be mined from sources inside the United States.
The Eagle weighs 33.9 grams, consisting of 31.1 grams of ‘pure’ gold (91.67%), silver (3%), and copper (5.33%). It is a favorite of investors and collectors for its high premiums, design, and enduring qualities.
The "Type I" design of the American Gold Eagle was produced from 1986 thru 2021.
Type II - American Gold Eagle
Coinciding with the American Eagle Bullion Coins' 35th Anniversary, the United States Mint announced the first change to the Mint’s two best-selling coin programs.
They announced new designs for the reverse sides of the American Silver Eagles and American Gold Eagles in 2021.
Thirty-nine images were provided to the U.S. Mint for the final approval of the gold eagle's design; the reverse design shown on the "Type II" was the one chosen.
Before the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coin was minted, the only gold bullion coin in production in the world was the South African Krugerrand.
In 1979, the 1 oz. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin was introduced by the Royal Canadian Mint, however, from 1979 to 1981, the coin only had a gold purity of 99.90%.
Since 1982, every Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin has been minted with 99.99% fine gold, making it one of the purest gold coins regularly issued.
In 2013, the Royal Canadian Mint added a laser-engraved security maple leaf feature to the reverse side of the 1 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion. Note: The security feature was only placed on the 1 oz bullion coin and not the fractional-sized Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin (1/2, 1/4, 1/10, 1/20 oz).
The new security mark is a Micro-Engraved Maple Leaf design produced by the Royal Canadian Mint's use of laser technology. Inside the laser-engraved maple leaf is the numeral indicating the coin’s year of issue, which is more easily visible under magnification. (Click to enlarge image)
Furthermore, in 2015, the Royal Canadian Mint added radial lines to make it harder for counterfeiters to reproduce the coins; these lines are inscribed on both sides of the gold bullion coin.
The 1 oz. American Silver Eagle bullion coin is the official silver bullion coin of the United States, and it regularly sells over 20 million coins a year in the three ways it is minted: bullion, proof, and uncirculated. The latter two are sold in collector's boxes with a certificate of authenticity.
On July 9th, 1985, the United States Congress passed the Liberty Coin Act; the law authorized the US Mint to produce the Gold and Silver American Eagle bullion coins.
The United States started minting the Silver Eagle Coin on November 24, 1986. The content, weight, and purity of the silver coin are certified by the United States Mint.
In 1988, two years after the successful release of the American Eagle Silver Bullion coins, Canada introduced the Canadian Silver Maple Leaf bullion coin, which was minted by the Royal Canadian Mint.
The Silver Maple Leaf has a purity of 99.99% silver, which makes it one of the purest bullion coins minted today.
Today, the 1 oz. Canadian Silver Maple Leaf is minted with many security features; on both sides of the coin are vertical radial lines and a micro-engraved maple leaf.
In addition, since 2018, all Silver Maple Leaf bullion coins have been made using a technology called MINTSHIELD, developed by the Royal Canadian Mint, which prevents white spots from forming on the coins.
In addition, each version of the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coin (gold, silver, platinum, & palladium) is offered by many online dealers with lower premiums than other bullion coins, making these coins one of the most cost-effective ways to buy precious metal bullion coins today.
An attractive characteristic that draws people to the Chinese Silver and Gold Panda bullion coins is that each year, the reverse side is redesigned with a new image of one or more pandas.
For the first several years after their initial release in 1989, the Chinese government limited the minting of Silver Panda bullion coins to a maximum of 100,000 to 200,000 coins per year. However, due to their growing popularity, China now regularly mints 10 million Silver Panda bullion coins each year.
Like the American Silver Eagle, the Chinese Silver Pandas often carry an attractive resale premium, making them a great investment.
