Homepage / Bullion Coins: Canadian Coins / 1 oz. Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf
Last Updated on 06/23/2024
First minted in 2005, the Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf was the first government-issued palladium bullion coin.
Until Canada released the Palladium Maple Leaf, several countries had issued palladium coins as commemorative issues but never as official government-backed, investment-grade bullion coins.
Obverse
The obverse of the palladium coin features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II; the effigy was designed by Susanna Blunt.
Inscriptions:
The Royal Canadian Mint added radial lines to make it harder for counterfeiters to reproduce the coins; these lines are on both sides of all the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins.
Reverse
The reverse of the palladium bullion coin features Walter Ott's design of the national symbol of Canada, the Maple Leaf.
Inscriptions:
The Edge of the coin is reeded.
The Royal Canadian Mint's bullion coin security mark is a Micro-Engraved "Maple Leaf" design produced by the Mint's use of laser technology.
In 2013, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) created the security feature and added it to the 1oz. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin's reverse side.
In 2014, the RCM started to add this feature to the reverse side of all the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins.
Inside the Laser-Engraved maple leaf is a numeral indicating the coin’s "Year of Issue," which is more easily visible under magnification.
