The 40th Anniversary Canadian Gold Maple Leaf Bullion Coin is a special commemorative bullion coin, produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, to celebrate the initial release of the 1 oz. gold Maple Leaf bullion coin.
The 1 oz. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin was introduced in 1979.
Before the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coin was minted, the only 1 oz. gold bullion coin produced was the South African Krugerrand, which was not widely available because of the economic boycott of South Africa's apartheid.
The United States did not produce a Gold Bullion Coin until 1986, after Congress passed the Liberty Coin Act, the law that authorized the U.S. Mint to start producing the American Eagle bullion coins.
The Canadian 1 oz. Gold Maple Leaf bullion coins minted from 1979 - 1981, had a gold purity of only .999.
Since 1982, every gold maple leaf bullion coin has been minted with .9999 fine gold, making the Canadian bullion coins one of the purest gold coins regularly issued.

Royal Canadian Mint - Customer Reviews
Over the last 40years, the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin has had noticeable changes to its obverse side.
The most noticeable change to the Canadian gold bullion coin has happened to the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.
The first photo, to the left, is the first effigy design of Queen Elizabeth II used by the Royal Canadian Mint.
The effigy was created by Arnold Machin and was inscribed on the gold bullion coin from 1979 to 1989.
The second effigy of Queen Elizabeth II was designd by Dora de Pedery-Hunt.
The Royal Canadian Mint used this effigy design, on the obverse side of the Gold Maple Leaf, from 1990 to 2003.
The current effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, below, was created by Susanna Blunt and was first inscribed on the gold bullion coin in 2004.
The effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in the next two examples has not changed, the change is found on the field of the bullion coins obverse side.
The field is the flat area of a coin’s surface that doesn’t have any design or inscription.
Between 2003 thru 2013, the field of the 1 oz. Gold Maple Leaf Bullion Coin was flat.
For security reasons, in 2014, the Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) added radial lines to make it harder for counterfeiter's to reproduce the coins, these lines are inscribed on the obverse and reverse sides of the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin.
Note:
It should be noted that the three effigies weren't only used on the obverse side of the Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin, but the three effigies were also used on the obverse side on all Canadian circulated, commemorative and bullion coins during the years noted under each image.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 40th Anniversary Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin displays the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Susanna Blunt.
Her initials "SB," are located at the top of the Queen's shoulder.
At the top of the coin is the Queen's name "ELIZABETH II."
Inscribed across the bottom of the gold bullion coin is the face value of "50 DOLLARS" and the years commemorating the coin's anniversary "1979-2019."
The Edge of the gold coin is Reeded.
Reverse
The reverse side of the 40th Anniversary Canadian Gold Maple Leaf
Bullion Coin features the "Maple Leaf" with a
"40" intertwined around it.
Inscribed along the top of the gold bullion coin is "CANADA."
At the bottom of the gold bullion coin is "FINE GOLD, 1 OZ, OR PUR" the coin's Fineness and Weight in both the English and French languages.
The coins' purity, of "9999" is inscribed on both sides of the 40th Anniversary Gold Maple Leaf.
In 2013, the RCM started to add a Security Mark to the the reverse side of the 1oz. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin.
The RCM's security mark is a Micro-Engraved Maple Leaf design produced by the Mint’s use of laser technology.
Inside of the laser engraved maple leaf is the numeral “19” indicating the coin’s year of issue, which is more easily visible under magnification.
Note: The Royal Canadian Mint (RCM) didn't start to put the security mark on the Silver Maple Leaf bullion coin until 2014.
