Homepage / Bullion Coins: Canadian Coins / 1/20 oz. Canadian Gold Maple Leaf
Last Updated on 06/23/2024
In 1993, the Royal Canadian Mint added the 1/20th oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf coin to their popular series of bullion coins; its one of the smallest gold bullion coins on the market and one of the most affordable.
Obverse
The obverse side of the 1/20 oz Canadian Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin displays the effigy of King Charles III of Great Britain, designed by Steven Rosati, a Canadian award-winning portrait artist.
Inscriptions:
The Royal Canadian Mint added radial lines on both sides of the gold bullion coin to make it harder for counterfeiters to reproduce the coins.
From 1952 through 2022, Queen Elizabeth II faced the right, and now the King of England, Charles III, faces the left.
Switching the direction a monarch faces on Canadian coinage for the British Royal Family is a tradition that dates back to the 17th century.

Reverse
The reverse side of the 1/20th oz. Gold Maple Leaf bullion coin displays Canada's National Symbol, the Canadian Maple Leaf.
The design of the Maple Leaf
is displayed in high detail it was
created by Walter Ott.
Walter Ott died on November 9th, 2020, at the age of 100; his family wrote in his obituary the following: "Of the more than 1000 coins and medals he brought into production, he was proudest of the Canadian Gold Bullion Maple Leaf he designed and modeled."
Inscriptions:
The Royal Canadian Mint added radial lines to make it harder for counterfeiters to reproduce the coins; these lines are on both sides of all the Canadian Maple Leaf bullion coins.
The edge of the gold bullion coin is reeded.
